Picking the right project is important when starting to learn about cross stitch. The perfect project will teach new techniques and provide a foundation on which to build

The first cross-stitch projects that a beginner will undertake will help to form the basis for the long term enjoyment of the hobby. If the wrong project is chosen this can result in result in disappointment and the cross stitch project being confined, unfinished, to the back of a drawer never to see the light of day again.

Picking the right first cross stitch project will help to build the foundations for a hobby that will bring stitchers of all backgrounds and experience pleasure for many years to come.

Tips for the Ideal First Cross Stitch Project

Here are some useful tips to help beginners pick their first cross stitch projects.

  • Use a Kit: Cross-stitch kits have been designed by professionals and will contain everything that is required to complete the project, right down to containing the right kind of needle. This saves having to buy the different elements separately. Kits often come with instructions that are useful when starting.
  • Pick a Small Project: While it is tempting to start with a large, highly decorative project, starting with a small project that is quick to complete is best. Small projects are generally easier to hold in the hand and the fact that they can be stitched reasonably quickly means that there is no chance for a beginner to get bored.
  • Simple Designs: A simple and straightforward stitch design is best as this allows a beginner to become comfortable before moving on to other stitches. A simple cross-stitch design is the ideal way to start.
  • Make Something Useful: When starting out, stitching a project for a specific purpose is often a good way to focus. This might include making cross stitch patterns for cards, or perhaps for framing. These also make great gifts and are a lovely way to mark a special occasion.
  • Choose Wisely: If a person does not like a particular design or color is not going to through themselves into a first cross stitch project that features these items. Someone who does not like flowers, for instance, is unlikely to be greatly enthused by a project that includes lots of floral designs. While it is possible to substitute colors, it is much more straightforward for a beginner to work with the colors in the original design.
  • Look for Bargains: Starting any new hobby can be expensive and many people are reluctant to spend lots of money on supplies they may only use once. Luckily cross stitch uses very little in the way of specialist equipment and supplies. Craft stores often have end of line sales where they sell off cross stitch kits at knock down prices. These can be an excellent way to buy a cross-stitch kit for someone not looking to spend too much money.

Cross stitch is a satisfying and rewarding hobby and one that will give years of pleasure to the cross stitcher and to recipients of beautiful hand stitched cards, pictures and other items.
