Teach Someone to Sew For Earth Day

Sewing and needlecraft is such a useful skill to have and just a few basic techniques can open up a whole new range of recycling and repurposing activities for someone as well as giving them the tools to create wonderful one of a kind items. Giving someone the gift of sewing and needlecraft also gives them the opportunity to help the environment. Teaching someone to sew won't take long and can be a very sociable activity. You will be giving them a lifelong skill that they in turn can pass on to other people. There are plenty of excellent free beginners sewing projects that can help.

Make Fabric Carrier Bags

Reduce our dependency on plastic disposable carrier bags by making fabric carrier bags out of fabric odds and ends or recycled clothes. These make great gifts so why not celebrate Earth Day by making a few to give to friends and family.

Other Green Sewing Resolution Suggestions

  • Think twice about buying new supplies until the existing fabric and notions stash is reduced.
  • Buy locally – if you can buy your sewing and needlework supplies from a local manufacturer then this saves on the miles that it takes to deliver an item.
  • Look for green alternatives, such as using organic fabrics to sew organic toys for baby and other supplies.
  • If you sell your sewing and needlework, use recycled packaging materials and pop a note in with your goods telling your customer that you use recycled materials.
  • Recycle your own items. If you have old fabrics, books or other supplies you are never going to use, sell them on to others. This will raise some extra money for you, give other people a cheap source of fabrics and supplies while also reducing the demand on virgin supplies.
  • Learn new skills – learning new skills such as embroidery, soft furnishing making or tailoring can help when looking to recycle or revamp products.

Green sewing and craft projects are good for the environment and also fun to do!
