Sew romantic heart shaped yoyos for Valentine's Day or other romantic occasions such as weddings. These are easy to make and can be adapted in a wide variety of ways.

Yoyos or Suffolk Puffs were traditionally circular shaped. While the circular shaped yoyo is straightforward and relatively easy to make, it is also possible to make yoyos in any variety of shapes. Hearts, flowers and other shapes are becoming increasingly popular, due partly to the innovative Clover YoYo Makers that help produce perfect shapes each time. It is possible to make a shaped yoyo using a template, and suitable templates are easily found. Cookie cutters, clip art or tracing simple shapes all provide good template material.

Heart Shaped YoYo

Heart shaped fabric yoyos are not just for Valentine’s Day and are useful for a number of different occasions, from adorning greetings cards to embellishing clothes and accessories. When making a heart shaped yoyo and creating a suitable template it is important to note the following:

  • The finished yoyo will end up half the size of the original template
  • The gathered nature of a yoyo means that intricate or sharp shapes get lost when making the yoyo
  • A couple of cunningly placed stitches at the top ‘dent’ of the heart will help enhance the shape of the finished yoyo

How to Make a Heart YoYo

One of the great things about making yoyos is that little in the way of special equipment is required and they are wonderful for using up odds and ends of fabric!

Equipment

  • Heart template (twice the size of the required finished size)
  • Scissors
  • Needle

Materials

Instructions

  1. Cut out the heart shape and make a row of running stitches about .5cm from the edge.
  2. Gather the edges of the yoyo by pulling the thread. Do this gently and help the yoyo gather around the shape of the heart, pulling it into shape.
  3. Tie off the thread securely. Add buttons, beads or other adornments to the yoyo.

Tips

  • Start at the ‘dent’ at the top of the heart
  • When finished a stitch at the top of the heart will help to draw in the top ‘V’ shape, sharpening it slightly and giving a more definite heart shape.
  • Add embroidery or stitching around the edge of the yoyo for added interest and detail.

How to Use Heart Shaped YoYos

Heart shaped yoyos can be used in a variety of ways and make lovely adornments.

  • Add to the front of cards or gift tags to give a hand made touch
  • Stitch a safety pin or brooch back to the back of the heart yoyo to wear as a brooch
  • Sew onto scarves and bags to give a romantic touch to an outfit

Heart Shaped YoYos For Valentine’s Day and Romantic Occasions

These little fabric hearts are ideal to use to create a Valentine’s Day theme. Attach to napkin rings, napkins, table runners or even candle holders for a romantic dinner setting, or sew a few together to make a lovely Valentine’s garland.
