Make reading with a child even more special with a blanket to snuggle under. Recreate simple pictures from a favorite book or coloring book to add more fun and learning.

Reading to children is so important. You do not need to be an artist or a quilter to quickly sew a special fleece blanket. Fleece projects are so simple because fleece does not fray at the cut edges. Adding simple fleece pictures to a purchased blanket is a fun way to personalize a gift for a youngster. Make story time even more special and cuddly soft.

What You Need to Make a Special Cuddly Blanket

  • Purchased fleece throw
  • A favorite book or coloring book
  • Sew in interfacing or Pellon's Pattern Ease
  • Fleece scraps in a variety of colors
  • White (or other color) fleece to make pages
  • book or coloring book , simple designs with just a few pieces are best

Getting Started

Cut as many pages as needed from the white fleece. It is much easier to create the pictures on a "page", then sew the page to the throw. This avoids having to sew on the whole throw for every piece. It also makes the back of the finished throw neater. Cut the interfacing into the same size as the pages.

Trace a picture onto the interfacing. Make a copy of it. Use the paper copy to cut apart to use as a pattern to cut the fleece. The interfacing pattern is kept whole, and will be used to easily place the cut pieces on the page. Cut the pieces one at a time. Place the cut piece in it's place on the back of the interfacing, and place on the page. Sew around the edges of each piece.

How to Sew Fleece

Fleece is thicker than most fabric and requires some simple steps for easy sewing. If your sewing machine allows you to adjust the pressure of the presser foot, loosen the pressure. Straight stitching is very difficult on fleece. Use a loose zigzag stitch. It's also helpful to gently pull the fleece through the machine. Pulling too hard can cause pucker, pull just hard enough to keep it moving.

Add Details to the Picture

Adding details is lots of fun. Use your imagination. You could even make a simple mini 3D fleece scarf around the neck of a snowman. Details can added with stitching before sewing the pages to the throw. You can also use fabric glue to hold small bits of fleece into place. These should be stitched once the glue has dried to avoid them being pulled off. Dilute the glue with a little water to keep it from being too stiff.

Sew the Pages to the Throw

Once your pages are complete, lay them out on the throw. Pin them into place on all four corners and in the center. Sew around the edge of each page.

That's it, you now have a snuggly soft blanket to make story time extra special. Just add hugs and giggles.
