Patterns for Spring Wraps to SewDesigns for Ponchos, Capes and Light Jackets for Beginners to MakeSuitable sewing patterns for spring feature easy-to-make ponchos, capes and jackets.
As late winter moves into spring, you’ll need a light wrap to keep you warm on cold mornings and evenings. Ponchos, capes and jackets are ideal for this time of year. These are easy to sew. When you’re looking for patterns, here are some ideas. Most of these are designed to fit a range of sizes. Butterick B4666 PonchoTwo of the five versions featured in this pattern have collars and front openings. One even has buttons all the way down the front, which defies the usual definition of poncho. This pattern is suitable for novices. All of the five styles are fairly simple to sew. The three ponchos are the easiest of all. Butterick B4928 JacketThis jacket is part of Butterick’s Retro ’52 designs. A loose fitting, lined jacket that falls below the hips, this has easy-to-sew kimono sleeves. It looks dressier than a poncho. Darts on the front shoulders give this garment a tailored look. There are neatly tapered pockets, which come in handy. Though this design doesn’t have a separate collar, the funnel neckline folds over to resemble a shawl collar. One version has a large cuff on the sleeve. This jacket has separate pattern pieces for the lining. Labeled as very easy, this pattern lives up to its name. McCalls 3448 One-Hour PonchoThis pattern is quick and easy. However, the one-hour refers to the sewing time, which doesn’t include cutting. This pattern offers six versions with several of these resembling capes. One version has a hood. Only two of the four versions are traditional ponchos. All of the others open in the front just like a cape. The dressiest style is shown with a contrasting faux fur trim. All of these garments are easy to make. The only tricky part is finding a cutting table large enough. This is basically made from one large pattern piece. Simplicity 4324 Cape This easy unisex pattern comes in a range of sizes for children and adults. The poncho is fringed. Designed specifically for fleece, this design also includes an easy pullover jacket. This pattern features a number of useful accessories. These include a hat, scarf, neck warmer, and bags. Simplicity 6658 Misses New LookCape This pattern features two styles of lined capes that are dressy enough for a business setting. These fall just below the hips. There is both a collarless and a collared version. This pattern includes several other matching items, such as a hat, scarf, vest, and bag. It comes in a variety of Misses sizes from 8 to 18.
