Use your sewing skills to make lovely Valentine's Day cards this year. Many free sewing and needlework projects can be adapted and turned into great handmade cards .

Why not sew Valentine’s Day cards this year. This is a lovely way to make a very personal card and to show someone you care. The cards need not just be for a sweetheart, use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to remind family and friends that you are thinking of them or that they are in your heart.

Sewing Projects for Cards

Sewing cards for Valentine’s Day are great project for beginner and experienced sewers alike.

  • Sewing adornments for cards are typically small projects and quick to complete. This means that they are ideal for trying out new techniques or working with different materials. For instance, if you have not tried your hand at cross stitch or needlepoint, how about giving it a go by stitching a small heart to attach to a card.
  • Sewing cards is also a great way to use up odds and ends. Small pieces of fabrics, ribbons, lace or other trims can be combined together to make some interesting results. These can be machine stitched or hand embroidered with hearts for a Valentine theme.
  • Even if you don’t fancy sewing a card for Valentine’s Day there are plenty of other ways to use up some of your sewing stash. Tiny buttons or beads can be used as charms to personalize a shop bought card.
  • Card blanks are readily available from craft stores and online and are a handy and convenient way to make your cards. The blanks typically have a window cut out on the front allowing you to present your needlework. These give the cards a professional finish.
  • Handmade needlework cards are also a great seller at craft markets and on online craft stores such as Etsy.com. Take a look at what other sellers are offering and keep a look out for any gaps in the market. Research the market well to ensure that you get your pricing right.
  • Before adding your finished project to a card, press it flat if necessary to ensure that it sits flat. This will show off your handiwork to its best advantage.

Find Free Valentine Themed Sewing Patterns for Cards

There are no hard and fast rules for what makes a suitable sewing project for cards. While flat projects obviously ideal, 3d projects such as tiny hand sewn bears or lovely embroidered fairies can all add the handmade touch when added to the front of a card as an embellishment and also make a lovely Valentine gift. Fortunately there is a wealth of free Valentine themed sewing projects on the Internet. These range from free Valentine cross stitch designs to heart quilt templates.

Many non Valentine patterns can easily be adapted and given a romantic feel. Heart adornments can be added through appliqué or embroidery and the strong Valentine colors of pink and red can add the suggestion of romance to any project.
