Whether you plan to make sun hats, fashion hats or other styles, here are some suitable sewing patterns.

Fabric hats are great sewing projects. Tickle your fancy and create ones to suit every need and occasion. Here are some recommended hat patterns.

Butterick Hat Patterns

Butterick B5004 includes a collection of five lined, high couture fabric hats. These have elaborate high crowns and brims of varying widths. Some feature veils or multiple layers of fabric. All of the styles make extensive use of embellishments and trim, including ribbons and bows. This pattern features three sizes.

Butterick B4532 has four soft, lined hat designs in a range of sizes from extra small to large. For these projects, mix and match striped fabrics and geometric prints with solids.

These styles have fitted crowns and brims. One features a narrow brim that can be rolled up. Another large brimmed design would make a good sun hat. This pattern also has four coordinating bags and totes. Two of the bags have wooden handles.

Vogue Hat Patterns

Vogue pattern 8052 has dressy vintage hats in six different styles. These formal hats are reminiscent of ones worn during the 1950s. Several have veils. One has a flat crown with no brim. These designs are decorated with fabric flowers.

Vogue V8532 offers innovative versions of berets by designer Patricia Underwood. Some of these have fitted brims or bands. Other styles introduce fullness in the crown with pleats or gathers. One of the designs looks very similar to a newsboy hat.

Vogue pattern 8405 has four versions of large brimmed, lined hats in three sizes. Depending on what fabric and trim you choose, these can look formal or casual.

Vogue 7600 has four hats in three sizes by designer Patricia Underwood. Some of them are lined. Most have brims. Two of these are sun hats with large brims, one of which features loops for sunglasses. One of the designs has a crown with four panels. Another dramatic, wide brimmed style has a flat crown. The pattern also has a scarf with a brim as well as a reversible turban. These designs could be dressy or casual, depending on the materials and finishing touches.

Vogue V8440 features three lined hats. These could be worn for most any occasion if you select the right materials. Assuming heavyweight fabrics are used, most styles would be suitable for cold weather. This includes a beret as well as a newsboy and a cloche.

McCall’s Hat Patterns

McCall’s has a number of hat designs by Laura Ashley, including all the following. McCall’s pattern M5641 features several styles of dressy hats with matching bags.

M4400 has a soft hat with a large brim. Depending on the fabric, this style could be casual or formal. The pattern features four styles of bags. These include a coin purse, hobo bag, cosmetic bag, and a tote.

M4794 is now out of print. However, this Laura Ashley design is still available from various sources. The soft hat with a brim could serve as a sun hat. The pattern includes an assortment of matching bags. If trims were added, it could be worn for formal occasions.
