Purses and bags are fun to sew. Start with a basic pattern. Then personalize your bag with unique fabrics and special detailing. Suitable Purse/Bag Sewing PatternsBags and purses come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Select a bag pattern that offers the space and features you need. The overall size is an important consideration. It needs to be large enough to hold your essentials. Outside pockets are helpful for storing keys and other things you need to locate quickly. Select a bag pattern that fits your skill level. Drawstring bags are a good starter project for beginners. These are simple and easy to make. Fabrics for Bags and PursesSelect sturdy, high quality fabrics that will last. Leather and vinyl as well as woven fabrics are suitable. If you plan on laundering the bag, be sure the fabric and linings are washable. Consider the texture and color of the fabric. It needs to be appropriate for the occasion and season. Funky prints are a good choice for everyday use during the summer. Solids work well any time of the year. For the winter season, dark colors, especially black and brown, are often preferred. Felt is good for small bags. This fabric is sturdy, and takes a lot of wear. Bags don’t have to be made from a single fabric. Regular patchwork and crazy patchwork bags are stunning. ClosuresWith the exception of drawstring bags, most purses and bags will need closures. The appropriate type of closure depends on the bag style and one’s sewing skills. The closures should be easy to operate and close securely. Ideas include zippers, buttons, snaps, and frogs. Magnetic snaps, which are especially secure, work well. Handles and Straps for Bags and PursesWith the exception of the clutch, bags have one or more straps or handles. For small bags, a single handle is enough. Larger bags require a pair of handles—one on the front and another on the back. Handles should be strong enough to support considerable weight. This can be metal, wood, or sturdy fabric. Attach the handles securely to the bag. Handles and straps should be the correct length for the type of bag you’re making. If adjustable straps are used, the bag can double as a handbag/shoulder bag. Avoid long handbag handles as they will drag your arm down. Both the width and length of shoulder bag straps need to be the correct size for the wearer. They shouldn’t slip off the shoulder or fit too high under one’s arm. Straps or handles need not be plain. Select a contrasting or coordinating fabric to add interest. String some beads on plain metal or wooden handles. Bag EmbellishmentsThere are many ways to embellish a basic bag. You can add piping, fringe, ribbon, or other trim. Other ideas include iron-on crystals, buttons, beads, bows, and decorative buckles. Appliqués are a good way to embellish a bag. Fabric and felt flowers as well as yo-yo flowers can be held in place with sew-through buttons. These can also be fused or stitched in place. Embroidery and top stitching can add interest to a bag. Cross stitch inserts are used as well. Outer patch pockets can also be decorative.
