A new website has been launched to celebrate handmade items. This will be of interest to people who make handmade items, and those who like to buy handmade.
People are invited to support the craft industry by taking the ´Buy Handmade´ pledge. BuyHandmade.org is a website where people can sign up, pledging to buy handmade and leave a short message supporting cause.
This will be interesting to hand sewers who sell their work, or are planning to sell work. Raising awareness of handmade goods is important. We often sell our products at what is seen as being a premium - even though the truth is that many other goods are sold at a discount. Trying to explain to someone at a craft market the fact that I pay myself less than the minumum wage, and no I cannot reduce my prices to match those of Walmart, can be quite a difficult and unrewarding task.
Any iniative that helps support handmade goods is a good thing and I hope it does well!
