When looking for smaller sewing and needlework project, don't confuse small with boring! There are plenty of exciting and innovative small projects available.
One thing that I really enjoy about needlecraft of all descriptions, is that there is something in the craft for everyone. Of course if you want to undertake a huge project which entails lots of intricate work on the finest materials this will entail a large cost and time investment; and will call on many skills and techniques. However at the other end of the scale there are plenty of small projects which needn’t be plain and boring. These smaller projects can still present a challenge, whilst not being costly or calling on top level techniques. One extremely fun project for someone looking for something a little different is the making of soft toys from socks.
I recently reviewed ‘Stupid Sock Creatures’, a book about making soft toys from odd socks. If you read this review you will see that this book proves that the key to an interesting sewing project is a lot of imagination and not necessarily a lot of expensive materials or equipment. Everyone has at least a couple of odd socks lurking in the laundry basket which can easily be turned into an interesting soft toy (I can’t bring myself to describe them as being cute – although, beauty is in the eye of the beholder….).
Sock Monkeys are easy to make - take a look at the free online instructions at the supersockmoney.com website. Another interesting free sewing project is for this Dancing Diva. There are many other small project which combine innovation and imagination, and which certainly can’t be called boring. I hope to cover many of these over future articles and to inspire fellow sewers and needleworkers to pick up needles and try something new.
